Under the Radar #10 – Donny Waits Share
“Under The Radar” is a regular feature on the Texas Music Scene where our official blogger, singer/songwriter/journalist Mike Ethan Messick, shines the spotlight on a deserving but lesser-known artist. Some of these subjects are just getting started and might be tomorrow’s headliner (or Texas Music Scene star); some are music veterans who’ve earned admirers around the state and around the world while taking the road less traveled. All of them well worth a look & listen, enjoy.
Gritty, gravelly, and intense, Donny Waits might be one of the friendlier outlaws you’d hope to meet but his sound is definitely on the hard-livin’, hard-lovin’ outlaw country side. Putting in a lot of miles between his Houston-area homebase and his rowdy Hill Country gigs, the last few years have seen Waits grow an audience for his rowdy, ragged brand of Texas/Red Dirt music through energetic stage shows and frequent airplay courtesy of the indie-friendly Radio Free Texas. He’s just released his first full-length album (full disclosure, this writer/singer sang a guest spot ont the record) this month, read on and give the man a listen, his new stuff should be up on iTunes and his website soon.
Name a couple of career highlights, so far.
To date, it would have to be having Phil Pritchett mix and master the latest album “It’s Come to This”

Name some of your main influences as a songwriter/musician.
Man, this list could go on forever. First and foremost … Cooder Graw. Then there’s Chris Knight, Charlie Robison, Walt Wilkins, and Phil Pritchett, just to name a few.
Who have you played more song swaps or co-bill with that anyone else?
I’d have to say my partner in crime Philip Griffin from The Philip Griffin Band.
If a fan’s buying you a drink … what’ll it be?
Lone Star……….but since some joints don’t carry Lone Star…….whatever they’re having.
Name a couple of people you’d like to publicly thank for helping you in your career.
Daniel and Cara Miller (El P and The First Lady)………They have always believed and supported my music since the first day I met them.
What’s one of the strangest gigs you’ve ever played?
The boys and I showed up to a gig one night to find a huge pit right at the front of the stage. The pit had to be every bit of 10’ deep and the stage looked like it was built from lumber that came from an old barn …..our drummer went in and told the owner that our drummer was sick and couldn’t make it. That is the first and only time we have ever cancelled while at the venue.
