“UTR#5 – Jeremy Steding” Share

Recently I jumped at the chance to co-write with a friend of mine – something I don’t do nearly often enough considering how many of my friends are perfectly good musicians – and it went so well that just this last week it was released as the first single and title track from his third (and in my humble opinion best, even if you discount my contribution) album. You’re gonna need to wait a few more weeks for the whole album to come out but if you’ve got an independent-minded country radio station within earshot hopefully you’ll be hearing “I Keep On Livin’ But I Don’t Learn” sometime soon. For the uninitiated, Steding has an immediately recognizable baritone twang (made more unique, maybe, by his Florida upbringing before he found his way to Austin), a knack for making classic country sound brand new again within his funny, self-aware, occasionally poignant songwriting voice. Here’s a quickie interview with him, check it out.
In your own words, describe your sound.
Vintage Country, Fried in Americana Batter
Where are you based out of?
The Live Music Capital of the World, Austin, TX
What are some of your favorite and/or most frequently played venues?
Coupland Dance Hall, Mi Casa Tamales (Boerne), Blue Light (Lubbock), Saxon Pub
Name a couple of career highlights, so far.
Creating an album with Walt Wilkins, opening for Clint Black, writing with Mike Ethan Messick (does that secure publication???)
What music do you have out already, and what’s coming in the near future?
Whiskey Songs and Prison Songs (2008) and A Damn Good Ride (2009) – Album #3 (titled “I keep on Living, but I don’t Learn”) will be released in Summer 2011.
Name some of your main influences as a songwriter/musician.
Johnny Cash, Robert Earl Keen, John Prine, Buck Owens
If a fan’s buying you a drink … what’ll it be?
Budweiser if I’m playing, a nice glass of Single Malt Scotch if I’m relaxing
Name a couple of people you’d like to publicly thank for helping you in your career.
Tiffini Brock, Karen Irwin (RIP 2009), Roger McGuinn (of the Byrds) for being cool enough to have answered, candidly, every e-mail I have ever sent him. Walt Wilkins, Katie Key, Rick Smitherman etc. etc. etc. I wish I could name 100!
